Languages and context

Languages

SafeAlt writes in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese. The language is that of the content where the image is used (Polylang and WPML are supported), otherwise that of your site. For any other language, texts are written in English.

The context used

For each image, SafeAlt takes into account:

  • the page the image is attached to: its title and main category;
  • your business, described in the settings;
  • the name and tagline of your site;
  • the file name, cleaned up.

Each piece of information has its role: the alt text describes what is visible in the image; the title echoes the page where the image is used; the caption and the description place the image in your business when it is related.

FieldExample (roof photo, roofer’s website)
Alt textStone house with a new slate roof under a clear sky.
TitleSlate roof of a stone cottage
CaptionComplete slate roof renovation in Kent.
Illustrative example.
WordPress attachment details: for a photo of a house with a slate roof, SafeAlt wrote the alt text, title and caption.
Attachment details after SafeAlt (mockup).

If the image is uploaded into a page that has no title yet, SafeAlt waits a little (one hour at most) to make use of it.

Quality checks

Each text goes through automatic checks before it is sent to you:

  • guesses (“probably”, “perhaps”) and generic phrases are detected and removed;
  • proper names that appear neither in the image nor in the context are detected and discarded;
  • the language of the text is checked;
  • captions and descriptions end with a complete sentence.

These checks greatly reduce errors without removing all of them: an AI can be wrong about what it sees. Review the important images of your site first.

If a doubt remains, the result is flagged “to check”: it is never written automatically and waits for you on the Proposals screen.

Name your files well

A meaningful file name (“slate-roof-cottage.jpg” rather than “IMG_2024.jpg”) and a well-described business give the best titles and captions.
